Welcome from the Chair

Dear Friends and Members,

Welcome to a new series of events from Music at St Martin’s. We hope that you will enjoy these events just as much as those you have attended in the past.

The year sees a number of new initiatives. This February has just seen the first of our new
schools’ series of concerts, with very fine performances by young musicians from Oundle School, including a plangent performance of Purcell’s Dido’s lament by Serena Shah. Our thanks go to both these talented musicians and their leaders, and to our audience, for turning out despite the freezing, snowy weather and for giving us a performance and programme that were very much appreciated by all.

This concert also saw the start of our series of
meal deals at the Bull & Swan. This arrangement enables you to take advantage of a favourably priced three-course meal with wine before coming on to a concert at the church. To book a meal, we ask you to contact the Bull & Swan direct, on 01780 766412; the price of the meal deal includes your concert ticket.

Our forthcoming events include what should be a super afternoon’s listening experience on
Saturday, 10th March, when you can hear the talented Jeremy Summerly leading Divers Voyces in a workshop which will include music from Thomas Ashe’s Missa Ave Maria as well as music by other less well-known composers – Peerson, Ford, Ward and Ramsey. Admission is free. The afternoon is to be rounded off by a presentation at 5-5.30 p.m..

Our
Early Music Workshop, led by our Musical Director, Giles Turner, on Saturday, 21st April, will be held at Barn Hill Methodist Church, and will explore the development of early vocal polyphony from its early Flemish masters Ockeghem and Josquin through to its zenith in Rome with Palestrina and Victoria. There will be something here for everyone, from the musical novice to the musical geek. Starting at 2 p.m., the workshop will close with teas at 5 p.m. and a performance at 6 p.m.. Tickets for students are priced at £3.00, so please encourage any young musicians that you know to attend. It should be a treat of an occasion, given Giles’ experience of inspiring the best from any singer and his ability to make the singing of any music rewarding.

The summer itself will begin with the welcome return of Kingfisher Chorale to St Martin’s, on 30
th June. Kingfisher, led by Giles Turner, will perform music by Willaert, Tallis, Byrd, Finzi and Britten. August will see, as usual, a series of lunchtime recitals. Please note that we are moving our recitals’ day from Wednesday lunchtimes to Thursday lunchtimes.

Yours as ever,
Helen Chew (Chair)
